Warning: Contains Spoliers

With six months to go, Wicked: For Good, released a teaser earlier this week, hinting at the film to come, and the trailer, which will be shared with fans on 4th July, 2025. The poster was released last week, and has got Wicked fans across the world excited at the film’s second instalment. As the resident Unglossed Wicked superfan, I am here to share everything I want to see in the trailer, and what can get the fans excited.

As a disclaimer, I have seen the original stage production on the West End, so I am familiar with the plot, knowing roughly what to expect in the second film. I will try to stay as spoiler free as possible, whilst also sharing some core insight into what we can expect to see in the trailer.

The trailer is being released in a rather unique way for a sequel, by premiering it in cinema screens for one night only, alongside a viewing of the first part. Unfortunately, for me and any other super fans, this is exclusive to the United States. Americans (or those committed enough to fly over) can see Wicked in cinemas on the 4th July. This is certainly a unique way of releasing a trailer, with trailers usually shown at big events like Cinecon, or like the first trailer, in the Super Bowl Halftime ads.

In my opinion, by releasing it in this way, they get fans excited for the film again, get them back in the cinema, and can start rebuilding the Wicked hype yet again. It also reinforces that this is not a sequel, per say. It is a part 2, it’s the rest of the show, the continuation of Elphaba and Galinda’s story. It’s not a stand alone film. This reshowing of the first film also has fans (me included) hopeful for double feature showings in November, when both films have been released. Although this does mean approximately five hours in a cinema, for Wicked fans, what has to be done will be done!

The run time of the new film is yet to be confirmed. Part 2 of the stage play is shorter than the first half, so we can expect either a shorter film to the 2 hour 40 minute first film, or more elements to the plot. Although the first film was much longer than the opening act of the stage play, it stayed very true to the plot, just with slightly more dialogue in places, and more breathing moments, for example, the dance scene between Elphaba and Galinda in the Ozdust ballroom. If there is a new plot to be added to the second part, this might be hinted at in the trailer, but this is probably something we might have to wait for the full movie to reveal.

One of the biggest rumours among fans is the introduction of Dorothy’s character into Wicked: For Good. While hinted at in the stage play, she is not a named character, but fans have speculated for part 2, we might get more of Dorothy and her influence with the two witches. If there is even a hint of her in the trailer, that’s a big movie tease, and definitely a headline.

So what can we expect to see in the trailer? Considering the film is called Wicked: For Good I am going to take a guess that the song it is named after, will at least be teased in the trailer. As my favourite song from the second half of the original stage show, I am very excited to hear this one, and will be trying to keep myself calm with any teasers we get of it. As for the other songs in the second half, many are either slower ballad style, or reprises from the first one. It has been teased however by Director, Jon m Chu, and Ariana and Cythina themselves that we can expect some new, original songs in the second film, written and composed by the original composer himself, Stephen Schwartz. Rumoured to have two new songs, if we get teased either of these in the trailer, it will be the leading conversation for Wicked fans in trailer news. Cythia said to Variety: “When we filmed it, the entire crew was in tears. I hope audiences are ready — it’s a song that speaks to the heart of who Elphaba is.”

So any snippets we could potentially get in the trailer of these new songs, will send fans crazy, for sure.

(SLIGHT SPOILER) For me, one of the most important elements of part 2 is the growing relationship between Fieryo and Elphaba. Although, I personally believe the first film makes their potential chemistry abundantly clear. We don’t see much of it however. Jonathan Bailey has proven time and time again that he can have chemistry with a brick wall, so I have high hopes for their beautiful relationship in the second part, and would love to see hints of this in the trailer. We’ve yet to hear their voices together on a song, but based on both of their performances on the first soundtrack, I think we should be excited to see them.

Overall, I’m very excited for this trailer, I think the expectations for this one are completely different to the first trailer. In that one, it was all about seeing what Ariana and Cynthia looked like in their roles, what they were bringing to the role, and what the movie’s production looked like. But generally, the plot was much less debated, and was more focused on what it would be like, if the film was going to be as good as it should be, if they had done the stage play justice. For this one, we know what to expect in these regards, after multiple award nominations, we know they have it in them to make an incredible movie, but now there are more questions surrounding plot, songs and what they are going to do with the rest of the story. I’m also buzzing to see if their press is quite as insane. Basically, I cannot wait.

You can watch Wicked: For Good in cinemas on 21st November 2025 and can stream Wicked on Peacock.
