Wicked: For Good trailer was released last night, and we think this film was always intended to be the Oscar winner.
From Glinda-Fiyero weddings to the Wizard of Oz characters, there is a lot to sink our teeth into, and you can watch Unglossed’s immediate reaction to it all.
The immediate takeaway is how different the general vibe is to the first one. Wicked was bright, pastel and Glinda was looking very well put together and popular. This time around, the mise-en-scene was darker, highlighting that the story in Part 2 will clearly take on a deeper and more serious plot line to the first one, which is why I believe they intended to take all the Oscars with the second film.
The first film by no means did badly in award season, taking home Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell, and Best Production Design for Lee Sandeles and Nathan Crowley. Ariana and Cynthia were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress respectively, and the film was nominated for Best Picture.
However, from watching the new trailer, it’s clear this one is less tailored for the musical theatre superfans, and could be more palatable for the general viewer. The second act has less of the classic songs, with Defying Gravity and What Is This Feeling already gone, those huge, super-theatrical dance numbers and songs will be seen less in For Good. This gives them more time to work with the plot and the character’s development throughout the film. I think there could be a lot of teary cinema rooms in November.
Ariana and Cynthia clearly already proved they are great in these roles, and can act and sing their hearts out, but this time, I think we will see more emotion, more development and even more Oscar worthy performances from them. They may not have had the Oscar sweep last year, but this January may see the Wicked cast on that stage multiple times.
