Kylie Jenner just casually commented her exact boob job details- from cup size to surgeon, under a random Tiktok video. Unglossed explores whether this reflects a broader shift towards celebrities being more open about plastic surgery?

It’s 2016, King Kylie is the aesthetic goal, her blue hair bob and transformation from tween to adult has everyone hooked. And the thing that everyone loves the most, is her new lips. The ‘Kylie Jenner lip challenge’ sent people into a craze. It involved people putting their lips into a plastic water bottle and holding them there, making them swell up, and sometimes would end in injuries and hospital trips. Kylie amongst all of this, is posting her new pout onto Instagram, whilst simultaneously promising that she hasn’t had any work done.

She explained that her new look was a mixture of growing up (not sure your lips doubling in size is a standard part of puberty, but whatever) and pure talent with a lip liner and a liquid lipstick. Now entre: The Kylie Cosmetics lip kits. An era which broke the internet for YEARS, and had us UK girls paying copious shipping fees to get lips like Kylie’s. And, whilst lip liners can work wonders on making lips look plumper, they are not the miracle workers kylie was sometimes suggesting they were.

She denied having any work done on repeated occasions, until she eventually admitted on an episode of Keeping up with the Kardashian’s that she had ‘temporary lip fillers’. Kylie seemed to very quickly go from a young teenager to an adult, partly due to makeup and styling, and partly due to fillers. It really sparked a wider conversation around filler and surgery at the time, as people couldn’t get over how frustrating it was to be told for so long that something was ‘natural’, for it later to be revealed that it really wasn’t. People began questioning whether celebs have a duty to share about their surgery and ‘tweak-ments’, and be honest about making changes to feel their most confident, especially since they are in a position which means the whole world compares themselves to them.

The Kardashian’s were constantly asked about their surgeries as the women that became the faces of beauty standards. But that doesn’t mean they were obliged to tell the truth. I mean it’s not an easy thing to navigate- be honest and risk being accused of promoting surgery, or lie and risk young girls thinking there is something wrong with them for not having perfectly voluptuous lips at nineteen.

To be fair to kylie, if people were criticising my thin lips online from as early as 13, and then later doing challenges to try to get them as comically big as mine, I too would feel insecure for the rest of my life. Flashforward to now, in 2025, Kylie has said she’s had a lot of her filler, including her lip filler, dissolved and now she wants to embrace her natural beauty into her late twenties. She has been incredibly open about this process to fans, and was pretty candid in the latest season of The Kardashians about how it has affected her confidence in different ways.

But now, like a public service announcement to the people, Kylie randomly commented under a TikTok video listing all the details to get a chest like hers. TikTok lifestyle creator, Rachel Leary posted a TikTok to her 150k followers and directed the video to “Kylie and Kylie only”, asking her for all the specific details of her boob job. Before now, Kylie had never explicitly confirmed she had ever had a boob job, so to drop the full info with just a small prompt was a big jump.

All we had to do was ask. No digging, no hounding, no bullying. Kylie replied with all the details, as Rachel had asked.

“445 cc, moderate profile, half under the muscle!!!!! silicone!!! garth fisher!!! hope this helps lol”

Iconic, Kylie.

Although I, and many others, have no idea what this actually means, it highlights a shift into a new wave of plastic surgery openness. Kylie has been hounded throughout her life with questions, conspiracies and rumours about her looks and her body, to the point where she had no autonomy over what she could share. She probably was never going to respond to some intrusive Hollywood reporter, but to the complimentary girlies of TikTok, of course she’s going to provide the goods. We’re all just girls, right!

In all seriousness, now she’s open about it, but did she ever have a choice?

The conversation around plastic surgery has been slowly becoming more open over the years, with more and more celebs being immediately honest about the work they’re having done. It’s not a taboo subject anymore and Kylie and the Kardashians, as well as countless other influencers, have been instrumental in this normalisation. They opened themselves to body scrutiny, and have over the years become honest with their journeys. Whether this is a good thing or not is to be debated, but the honesty surrounding the subject is commendable. Beauty blindness and the number of people we can compare ourselves to on Instagram is a danger, particularly to young women, who believe this is the real way people can look, the way they were meant to look. At least now, rather than women looking to dangerous water bottle challenges to get the juicy lips Kylie has, they can ask Kylie directly on TikTok to get exactly what she has, safely and responsibly.
